Jeddah, Is it Changing?

On Thursday 13th July, Qenan Al-Ghamdi wrote an article in Al-Watan newspaper about the new committee developed in Jeddah. The role of the new committee is to “inspect” on restaurants, cafes, malls and parks.The committee will check on public premises to see whether there are mixed gatherings. The writer inquires about whether the committee has something to do in shutting off a very well known amusement park in Jeddah.
Today I received an email from our friend Mansur. It explains that Jeddah residents have sent a petition to the mayor requesting him to reconsider their decision of forming such a committee.
Personally, I don’t think we need such a committee. We got used to a certain lifestyle in Jeddah and that won’t be changed easily. And I do believe that Jeddah has been known for it’s uniqueness and that it is distinctive from other cities and towns in Saudi Arabia, segregation takes place in Jeddah but not at the same intensity as in Riyadh and other parts in the Kingdom. I just hope that this committee will vanish soon…

1. scope of authority is undefined and overlapping the hay2ahhhh and police (and we thought we started to get rid of them !) and now they give us another! what is this?
2. Are Jeddah people that immoral and illiterate that “general” manners need to be ENFORCED!? It doesn’t make sense. What does the Muhafadah get out of stopping festivals and raiding people, tearing down billboards and not allowing mohammad abdo sing? I don’t get it!
3. Women going out with no mahram in a safe restaurants harrassed…( Taliban syndrome )
4. No loud public music in restaurants etc…
5.termination of Saudi women working in ” suspecious harrassment prone areas” ex. Tahlia !

I really have nothing more to add to this absurdity.. there’s nothing left for them to do but to enforce an “in-house” dress code and knock on everyone’s door and make sure that they abide by it..
I think who thought of this briliant ideas were the female citizens of another certain city in Saudi Arabia.. you know, coz when they come here with their husbands, the “poor” guys are just overwhelmed and it “forces” them to stare at anything that walks, and this “committee” would be far easier to implement than some manners and ethics into those guys..
better yet.. why don’t they just form a comittee to prevent these people from coming to Jeddah and harrassing our women, coz i think it’s really obvious during the summer who is causing the chaos

First impressions *omg so it’s true what they say about the saudis, how yukky*
Sorry to be blunt but you guys are sad, I would give pretty much anything to live in a Muslim country, to be allowed to follow my deen in all aspects of my life regardless of whether what I think is acceptable or politcally correct. You so don’t know what you have wAllaah, living your lives of luxury at the expense of the Muslims of ummah, even of your own people.
I read with disgust the what I would call wannabe-gore-ism (I’m not racist really!) that envelopes you, how ridiculous that saudi women take of their abayas as soon as they get on the plane. I mean guys, don’t you have any kind of self respect??? Don’t you teach your women any Islam at all? Er are fighting here to be allowed to wear niqaab in medical school and hospitals, when I read stuff like this just feel sick.
You lot really need to come out into the real world where women get their hijabs pulled off by bnp gangs in the streets, where you get called a paki or a raghead because you’re a muslim, where you have to fight to be a muslimah and stick up for what you believe in.
Or an even further cry from all this, a world where people die of starvation and easily treatable diseases, where women go into prostitution because of money, where women are raped because their lands are taken over by invaders and the muslim men don’t care, where the real muslim are tortured to death in jails (welcome to the kingdom!) because they mentioned the “j” word, ooooops, sorry I’m not a terrorist really! I think you hit the “reply button” on the wrong blog. You seem to be extremely upset about some sort of “ignorance” and “arrogance” which I, among many other bloggers, fail to notice in this post.
Assuming, however, that you truly do mean this blog, I must say that I’m very disappointed in your “holier-than-thou” attitude. You have no right whatsoever to call the blogger such degrading names, nor make such generalizations about Saudis which are pretty much racist and ignorant in themselves. I am not denying the presence of problems in the Saudi society other than the ones mentioned in the posts, but a person should approach problems one by one. It’s truly sad to see a person claim to defend Islam and want what’s better for Muslims all over the world, when he himself can’t even regard the simplest rules of being a Muslim; being kind and avoiding racism and hurtful words.

Now, are we still the racists here? As it’s shown from your comments, your not worried about Islam! you are just against Saudi Arabia. As DiDi made it clear, we as Saudis do have many problems. Going back to the main topic. It is sad to see the Salafi extremists further destroying our society, and I applaud all efforts people are making to stop them. I have posted the Jeddawi petition to a few forums to push things forward.

You claim you are British (a British Pakistani probably), thus you are probably pretty good at debate, so I’d like to have a proper discussion with you, point and counterpoint, none of this nonsense language that only aims to anger the masses. Unless of course, you are mentally incapable of it..
First,
When did Saudi Arabia claim to be perfect? I would like to see any country in the world try to implement Islamic Law and make it their constitution, but all these so called “Muslim countries” always seem to allow Western law to govern them and become puppets to the West.
And I know we have a lot of problems, hypocrites and social issues, but what country in the world is better? I’ve lived in the US, Canada, and Saudi Arabia for extensive periods of time as well as visited more than 20 countries, so I believe I have a somewhat reasonable understanding of how things work.
Second,
I believe you are Pakistani (correct me if I’m wrong) from the issues you brought forth. You mention alcohol and prostitution etc. by Saudis. Do you think Pakistan is any different? And you are angered by how people are mistreated. Have you ever been racially profiled at any airport? Stripsearched because of the passport you’re carrying? Imprisoned unjustfully for a prolonged period of time because of your belief? I know many people that have, so if you are suffering doesn’t mean it’s only you.
It is true that workers and laborers suffer a lot at the hands of those less respectful Saudis, but if they don’t like it, they are welcome to leave, if they would like to stay for whatever reason they should learn to deal with it, or contact the appropriate authorities or change their sponsors. I know of many workers that could ask for nothing more, they are more than happy to stay.
As far as I know the Saudis living there like it, and lots of the foreigners love it, and those that don’t, don’t stay. I have friends from Dubai that come to Riyadh because they’re sick of the fakeness etc. There are many stories of Saudis that live in the West because they can’t take it, and it is good riddance, let them enjoy the Western dream and the liberties they have, they are free to do so.
And the Haya’a no matter how bad/ignorant they are, do so much more good than harm. They’ve successfully stopped drug trafficking, alcohol factories etc. It is true that they can get on your nerves and many seem unreasonable. But from my experience with them, if you give them a good argument and you’re respectful they walk away. If you curse and try to challenge them they will cross the limits..
Using the phrase “you people” has blatant racist connotations, also, if you are treated like trash everywhere you go, that certainly does not happen to me. I am welcomed wherever I go, and I raise my green passport high up, not out of arrogance, but I am not going to be afraid of people’s ignorant actions. I aim to promote a better understanding of Saudi Arabia because I am displeased with a lot of the actions that my countrymen choose to commit. Thus I would like to counterbalance that.
And if you are only here to complain/rebel against Saudi Arabia, please find another form of expressing yourself, Saudi has more than enough hypocrites, rebels, and people that complain and we don’t need any more, what we need is problem solvers and people that actually want to help, otherwise keep quiet.

If i were a “typical” Saudi girl, then horray for the future generation as this means that all Saudi girls are highly educated and capable of expressing their point of views clearly and nicely (unlike some other people here, i.e. you).
I have noticed a pattern in your writing; that if someone comes across a very obvious defect in you argument which you can’t answer, you just jump immediately to attacking them personally, as you did me.
As for the people in Lebanon, according to your infinite wisdom and understanding of the mysteries of the world, they are being slaughtered due to their “misdeeds”. Question: why is it that this concept doens’t extend to the way “your people” are being treated; because of their “misdeeds”? Or is this one of your hypocrite conecpts which apply to all people but your own? Or maybe, just maybe, it is because this conecpt is just moot?
If someone here were an ignoramus, it would be you.. Because, seriously, if you really feel like trashing someone, just check you facts.. this saying is not from a Muslim scholar, it’s from before the age of the Prophet (PBUH). Hypocrisy is everywhere… Be it in Saudi Arabia, Great Gritain, Nigeria, USA or Brazil… It is not wise to point out flaws in one country while ignoring the same flaws in another… Let me give you an example… Only a few days ago Georege Bush, representing the US, came out in the news and claimed that the US had not given Israel the green light to attack Leb (Because it wasn’t morally right to do so just because of two hostages), but the next day Israel said that the US did indeed give them the green light to attack!! Contradicting reports? Hypocrisy anyone!?
4. Do you really believe that only Saudis are being searched, detained and degraded with at foreign airports and entry points?? How about Pakistanis? Kuwaitis? Egyptians? Indonesians? etc? Even French Muslim ladies that have Hijab on are targeted! You need to understand that the target is Muslims, not Arabs! You’re associaction is somewhat off…
5. It’s funny how you claim that Saudis were savages before Islam when in reality there was no such thing as a Saudi back then! Jeddah and Makkah were part of Hijaz, then there was Najd, and then Bilad al Furs (Persia) as well as Bilad Al-Sham (Now Syria, Leb, Jordan and Palestine), Yemen, North Africa (Now consisting of Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, etc..) Your are pathetic.. you sound like a five year old. You talk about hypocricy, you are making fun of my name, and you say Saudis are disrespectful, I don’t see you doing much different. If we have a Munafiq society, are you trying to fix it by making these comments or solely trying to be loud and have people hear you and bring attention to Saudi Arabia?
We have done more in 50 – 70 years than most countries have done in 500 especially in education, in addition our charity and aid efforts are the leader compared to other nations, and don’t tell me it’s because of oil, because we have a much larger population than most gulf countries, yet I don’t see them killing themselves contributing as much as we do..
Also, believe me, you are not the first to defame Saudi, so no one really cares what you say there are many people that are jealous, or annoyed at Saudi Arabia, adding your voice doesn’t make you stronger, rather it shows that you a so-called “Muslim” can’t even try to assist your Muslim brothers, rather act like ignorant non-Muslims who judge a country based on the actions of a few individuals.
Actually some of my closest friends are Pakistani whether it be here in the US or in Saudi Arabia.
And again I reiterate if you are treated like shit, then I am definitely not, and the worst I’ve had at an airport is a wait time for a few hours due to a huge number of “special registrants” and in my last couple of trips that has been non-existent.

Back to the original topic, I think a watchdog committee to observe couples behavior in public places is absolutely a bad idea. We had enough of the religious police. I mean unless the couple are doing raunchy acts in a public restaurants, then they should be left alone, for God sake they not going to fornicate on top of the table.
